New Year’s 108 Sun Salute Event

Sun-Salutation-Pose-SequenceHosted by the teachers of The Yoga Mat

Saturday 1/4 from 2pm – ?

Come ring in the New Year with the challenge of completing 108 Sun Salutes. We’ll have 8 Yoga Mat teachers leading you through each one until you have successfully completed all 108.

Traditionally this ritual is done at the turning of each season or done for celebration or coming together to support a cause or purpose. We will be completing the 108 in honor of the new year together.

Why 108, you ask…here’s some reasons why that number is important to yogis:
– 108 is the number of “Upanishads” comprising Indian philosophy’s “Vedic texts”.
– 108 is the number of names for Shiva (a really important Hindu god).
– 108 is the number of names for Buddha.
– 108 is the Chinese number representing “man”.
– 108 is the number of beads on a Catholic rosary.
– 108 is the number of beads on a Tibetan “mala” (prayer beads, analogous to a rosary).
– 108 is twice the number 54, which is the number of letters in the Sanskrit alphabet, one set of masculine (shiva) and one set of feminine (shakti).
– 108 is twelve times the number 9, which is the number of vinyasas (movements linked to breath) in a Sun Salutation
– 108 is the number of Sutras in the Yoga Sutras
– 108 connects the sun, moon and earth as the average distance of the sun and moon to earth is 108 times their respective diameters.

Yin Yoga Workshop THIS SUNDAY @ 2pm

With Rachael Bowen and Sarah Griisser

Sunday 12/15 from 2pm – 4pm

$20 per person

Join us for a journey into Yin Yoga! Yin yoga is based on the Taoist principal of yin and yang – opposites/complementary. If Yang is a heated, cardiovascular based yoga practice, Yin would be its cooling, stable and grounding yoga complementary opposite. Yin poses are held for 3-5 minutes a side and all take place on your mat either seated or lying down.

Holding yoga poses has always been a significant part of any traditional yoga practice but yin poses are specifically designed to improve energy flow in the body and gently stress the connective tissues which increases blood flow and flexibility.

As we move through our workshop, we will focus on finding the appropriate edge or intensity for YOU and your body. We will work on being still in each pose for 1-3 minutes and we will pay attention and release into each pose with care.

Expect a slow warm up, moving through some traditional yoga asana followed with lots of yin poses, props and adjustments!

Groupons are not valid for this workshop.

Donation Meditation Class this Sunday!

medium_MeditationThis Sunday 11/3 from 7 – 8pm kicks off our first DONATION MEDITATION CLASS led by Mel Johnson!

Learn more about Mel below:

As a student of some fabulously-brutally honest girlfriends, world travel, her awesome adviser, and various Yogis and Yoginis, Yogic philosophy runs through her veins and lungs. Mel believes that immersing herself in other cultures furthers her understanding of human behavior in both mind and body. She’s lived in Taiwan, traveled to Japan, Indonesia, and India, and has been to 44 US states – and the other six are on her bucket list. One of her favorite Yoga experiences was in India where, instead of the traditional Yogi bath in the Ganges, she kayaked in its northern Class IV rapids with a Brahman river guide. She recently completed her graduate work at George Mason University in Religion, Culture & Values with a focus on Conflict Analysis & Resolution while studying Indian philosophy, psychology and somatic skills in conflict. While living in the DC area she wrote a Yoga column for an online newspaper, and some of her articles have been published in elephant journal. She is a Yoga entrepreneur, paddleboarder, hiker, Buddhaphile, oenophile and smartass. Her latest project is to open a tutoring-mentoring center for middle school students teaching critical thinking and writing. She is grateful to hang her Yoga hat at The Yoga Mat.
